I would imagine as you leave home and rent your first apartment, when you walk through the front door you very well could be looking at your living room. This is the first view into your new life, home away from home. Since this will lead to a lasting impression on your guests, you want to select a living room style that is a reflection of your true self. You will need some help. We are along for the journey and offer decorating small living room ideas!

Your vision.

You want to start with a list (I know, another list!). You probably will be going shopping at an actual store and you may be shopping on line. Since this is such a large step (not to mention a large investment), you want to take your time and do the research. But in order to do the research, you need to decide what type of style are you gravitating towards. Are you looking for light and airy? Or maybe you are thinking about pops of color. Do you feel you prefer the look of modern furniture and simple lines? YOU know best! Take your time and enjoy this step!

Let’s start to pull this look altogether.

Now that you have decided on THE look for your first apartment, you want to see how you can pull together your vision. Now is the time to go back to Pinterest and see all your pins (you’ve been thinking about this for a long time!). Same with Amazon – go see what’s in your cart for home decor. And maybe you have some accessories saved in your Walmart cart. Regardless, it’s now time for purchases!

First big ticket item.

You are now ready to purchase your couch. This is a big step! One of your biggest purchases for your first-time apartment will be your couch. Since this is a rather large purchase, you want to find one that not only suits you, but one that makes you excited to think about all of the upcoming design ideas that will complement your couch. A good idea – measure your space so you know what will fit. Some things to think about – if you are in a one-bedroom apartment you may want to consider a sectional (which will fit in a small space!) for your out of town guests (your college roommate is going to want to visit and may need a place to sleep!). You could be deciding on a sleep sofa (your college roommate will be super comfortable). Maybe you are considering a bold color that matches your exuberant personality. Or maybe you are thinking about a small couch and a patterned side chair.

No matter your choice, you have to be happy and comfortable with that decision. There are so many places you can look for a couch. You can hit your local furniture stores. Although some feel that this route may be on the pricier side, think of the purchase as yet another investment for your adult life. Other great spots for furniture include Wayfair, Target and Amazon. Maybe you are lucky enough to get a hand me down sofa from a family member (and it’s still in great condition!). Wherever you end up buying your sofa, you are off to a fantastic decorating start!

The look.

Your guests won’t know what catches their eye first! You have started to design a space that simply says YOU. Your guests are going to love it and I’m sure they will take away some of your design ideas and choices. Here’s wishing you continued success!
